Gruene, TX

Welcome to the home of America’s oldest Honkey Tonk! We only knew that Jeff lived between San Antonio and Austin. We were undersold. Gruene (pronounced Green) is the one of the most famous bed and breakfast towns in the state.

The town was exactly the way I imagined a Texas town: the corner store, a Texas state flag seemingly the size of a basketball court, lots of pick-up trucks, and dance halls posing as bars with cowboy-clad bands and line-dancing patrons. The only things it was missing were tumbleweed, a one-room school-house, and oil derricks (those were coming on the drive through west Texas.

The trip is off to a great start – what I thought would be one of the more boring stops ended up being a really unique experience in a fun Texas town.
